The coup that was not a coup

What major historical events do you remember?

I don’t know where I should begin; the events that led to the coup or the deaths after the coup. I remember waking up to see the late  Former Minister of Foreign Affairs addressing the nation on our only national television broadcaster (ZBC). It was wild, what do you mean by enemies surrounding the President? I can’t remember well at some point, the late President was under house arrest or something amid being seen outside at a graduation ceremony. A lot was going on in my mother’s land. I couldn’t even grasp or understand anything.

The late Former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

I remember this one day in November 2017 when I was in my mother’s field weeding. I heard this earplitting noise from cars and people. Celebrations of a new Zimbabwe were underway.  The military was also in the streets, taking selfies with citizens. This never happened in my country. It was euphoric for some. I had a strange feeling about everything. Not having the late President Mugabe as our leader did bring a little comfort and hope but I had a bizarre feeling about everything.

Fast forward to 2023, 6 years after the soft military coup nothing has changed. Zimbabwe ‘s economy keeps deteriorating, the inflation and unemployment rate are so high. Sixty-three percent of all households live in poverty, and 16 percent live in extreme poverty.

This was meant to be short but this will go down in history books.
